Holy Spirit Outpouring at Carve

CarveI was recently invited to speak at a business called Carve. They asked me to speak on the baptism of the Holy Spirit and I gave testimonies of the power of the Holy Spirit working in my life and ministry. At the end I called for people to receive Jesus and about half the people prayed to commit their lives to Jesus.

As one young man was saved he said it was his first time to hear about Jesus like that.

After that I called them forward to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Many people were filled and even children that were at the meeting “fell down in the power of the Holy Spirit.” Let me repeat. Carve is not a church. It is a business. In all my years of preaching the Gospel I have never seen anything like this in a business. It was awesome.

Kids fell down in the power of the Holy Spirit.

We Are now Feeding Little Kids!

IMG_3250Through a great new partnership with Center of Life Ministry and Pastors Joshua and Emi Hernandez, we are now feeding about eighty children who come to the Refuge Youth Center for church.

These kids live in poverty in a dangerous squatter neighborhood right behind the Refuge.  Every Sunday morning the kids who come to Pastor Joshua’s church at the Refuge get to leave with a fresh, nutritious meal as they are fed both physically and spiritually.IMG_3289

Through your financial support, God is doing an exciting new thing here and fighting child poverty in the Philippines. Thank you for being a part of it.

Back on the Radio

DJ Matt on 104.3FM The Edge Radio Davao

We kicked off a new season of the Cutting Edge Show this month. The show is currently live during prime time Thursday nights. On my evangelistic show we talk about current events and always bring a biblical perspective to the show while bringing a salvation message. I always enjoy going on the air to preach the Gospel to of the Kingdom of God to people. We are having plenty of good feedback from the listeners.

Right after praying the prayer of salvation with my listeners on my most recent show,  I received this text message,

“Thank you Lord for accepting me again. Thank you Jesus for your Blood. God bless you DJ Matt.”

I have been broadcasting on 104.3 FM Edge Radio Davao for about five years now. It’s amazing how many people we are able to reach through the media in a city of two million people.

The Refuge Events

Worship with Alwood WIck

We are still holding Worship Events at the Refuge Youth Center with great testimonies of people being refreshed and touched by the Lord.

Worship with Kim and Tina Villanueva

We have guest worship leaders come in regularly. Our most recent event had people from five different churches and two other ministries attend. Our vision is to be a refreshing watering hole for other ministries to come, have fun, and get filled up with the Lord through worship.

The Refuge is also home to two local churches that will still operate while we are in the USA. Please continue to pray for the Refuge to operate smoothly while we are away.

The Refuge: Home to Two Churches

Hope SG Church Davao

Hope Davao Church regularly meets at the Refuge Youth Center.

One of the ministries of the Refuge Youth Center is helping churches with a nice, air-conditioned, affordable place to hold their services. Rent in Davao City is expensive and that is many times crippling to new churches. We offer the Refuge as a place for these churches to meet for just a little more than the cost of the electricity for the day.

Hope SG Church Davao City

One of those churches is Hope Davao Church which meets regularly on Sunday afternoons at the Refuge. Hope Davao is a church plant from Singapore, and I make a point of joining them in all of their services.

Also, Redeemed Covenant Church meets here every Sunday morning led by my good friends Pastors Joshua and Emi Hernandez. They have lately been just overflowing with children in their services.

Please continue to pray for and financially support the Refuge so we can continue to help these churches.

Helping the Fire Refugees

Visiting the Badjao Refugees

In our last newsletter, I wrote about the terrible fire that made hundreds of poverty-stricken families homeless. Sadly, this fire became much more of a tragedy than I previously reported.

Badgao Isle Verde Fire Refugee Camp in Davao CIty

In the place they were evacuated, measles and other diseases broke out. Twenty-two people died in this refugee camp from the heat, disease, malnourishment, and unclean water. Many of the ones who died were babies and children.

Badgao Little Boy

I went with our church back to help these precious people rice to help them survive. Although it seems almost like we barely made a dent in the overwhelming need, at least we did what we could for them.

My heart breaks for the Badgao people. I am fighting back tears thinking that perhaps we could have done more for these people and save more of their lives.

These people are squatters, not just because of poverty, but also exclusion and discrimination. They are given no opportunity to succeed. It’s almost unbearable to visit the refugee camps and see their living conditions. Please pray for their salvation, healing, wholeness, and restoration.

The Isla Verde Fire

The wasteland once known as "Isla Verde."

The wasteland once known as “Isla Verde.”

There was a huge tragic fire that ravaged Isla Verde, a squatter area here in Davao City. It destroyed hundreds of homes and was a horrible blow to the local Badjao tribe. The fire forced them out of their homes and now hundreds of families are living in a local park in a tent city of tarpaulins.

Our church went to help these people the afternoon after the fire and gave food, water, and hygiene kits until supplies ran out. We also went back later to distribute over one ton (1,000 kilograms) of rice during a thunderstorm. We went from tent to tent slogging through the mud and water to get the rice to these precious people.

I got to drive nine volunteers to the site and drove home with 14 volunteers in my overloaded vehicle. I want to give credit to my local church that provided the supplies as we did not have the financial resources to help. Thanks to our church, I was able to pray for people in the soot and rubble, and give out rice in the mud and rain.

We Finally Bought a Drum Set!

Our New Drum Set!

We finally were able to buy a new drum set for the Refuge for only $250.00. Also with the help of a brilliant technician, we repaired the broken power amplifiers that we have been borrowing.  Repairing those amplifiers are an answer to prayer and are able to help us continue indoor events at the Refuge.

Our Drums in Action!

We are still believing God for a portable 4,000 watt sound system complete with speakers and amplifiers with stage lighting and instruments to use for outdoor outreaches. The drums are the foundation of our stage set up. We still are in need of a bass guitar, acoustic guitar, and an electric lead guitar to complete our stage, but we are so thankful to have a drum set!

Live on the Radio Again

In January, I returned to my radio show on 104.3 FM The Edge Radio Davao. Being on the radio here has the potential of reaching two million listeners on the only Christian FM radio station in Davao City.

Live on the Radio at 104.3FM The Edge Radio Davao

My two hour show, “The Cutting Edge Show,” has a weekly prime time slot on Thursdays at 7 PM. The show consists of Bible teaching surrounded by Contemporary Christian music.  I usually spend about five minutes teaching per segment and play two or three songs before returning to my topic.

No matter what the topic, I always make a point to bring a salvation message to win souls every show. Last week, I received a text message from one of my listeners that the song I played touched him and “brought tears to his eyes.” I thank God that we can touch many lives like this through the radio.

Powerful Worship at the Refuge

Awesome Worship at the Refuge Youth Center.

Powerful Worship at the Refuge Youth Center.

We have been continuing our worship nights at the Refuge Youth Center and they seem to get better each time we have them. At the most recent one last week, the praise and worship lasted for three hours straight and when the music stopped, no one wanted to leave. The people just sat there in the stillness of God’s presence. The tangible presence of God was just overwhelming.

I’ve had other ministry leaders thank me for having a place where they can be refreshed outside of their own ministry. Thank you for supporting the Refuge. We are changing lives together.
